About Kurt Winkelmann
My musical journey started early, with piano lessons at age six. I got my first guitar at age 11, and have stuck with guitar ever since. As a teenager I started out playing rock, including playing bass in rock bands while at university. It was while I was in college that I developed an interest in jazz, and when I started learning how to play jazz guitar.
Rather than focus on music during college, I earned undergraduate degrees in Economics and Mathematics. I went on to earn a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota. That said, music was still part of my life during graduate school- to support myself, I played wedding jobs and taught guitar.
After finishing my Ph.D., I embarked on a 30-year career in quantitative investment research. With that (mostly) behind me, I have returned to music and especially jazz. To that end, an to deepen my understanding, I recently completed a degree in guitar from the Berklee College of Music, studying with Norm Zocher.
What I like about jazz is that it is a genre that draw upon, and influences, so many other areas of music. Consequently, it is open for deep analysis. The connection between creativity an analysis runs through the work of many of the artists who have influenced me: Jim Hall, Bill Frisell, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Wayne Shorter and others.
Today, my wife and I split our time between Portland, ME and Madrid, Spain.
